On Monday night the whole
entertainment and fashion system walked the red carpet into the Metropolitan
Museum of Art to celebrate the opening of the Costume Institute's next exhibit,
“China: Through the Looking Glass.” Having mentally prepared myself for a
repeat of 2013’s confused and messy interpretation of the theme, I was pleasantly
surprised by the night’s red carpet that featured some daring, bold and smart looks,
worthy of the occasion.
An example? Cara Delavigne’s black Stella McCartney jumpsuit
that would have totally gone unmentioned if it hadn’t been for the gorgeous,
floral, tattoo-like art that covered her arms. Or Solange Knowles’ circle Giles
creation which seemed to have a reflecting quality about it making her somewhat
of a living looking glass (mind blowing, I know!). And we can’t talk about
boldness on the red carpet without mentioning Sarah Jessica Parker and her much
talked about look: say what you want but there is no one on this planet that
could wear that headpiece with the same confidence and poise that she can! Plus,
she managed to wear an H&M look (that she helped create) and make it look
couture so kudos for that!
Monday night’s red carpet was also a night of firsts.
Amal Clooney attended her first ever Met Gala (the first of many, I’m sure) in
a spectacular custom made Maison Margiela gown that was actually a reinterpretation of a
Dior by John Galliano dress from the 2007 Spring Haute Couture collection which
was inspired by China. Whereas the original gown was acid green this one wad a
deep shade of red with an armor like bodice and a layered skirt…simply stunning!
Another first of the night was my true appreciation of a Kim Karshian’s look.
Sure, many thought that the Peter Dundas for Roberto Cavalli dress looked an
awful lot like the Givenchy Couture gown that Beyonce wore at the 2012 Met Gala, but I thought that the dress was very elegant and refined while still
being true to Kim’s esthetic…so, well done Kim!
There can’t be a ball without a
princess or a red carpet without a queen and Rihanna sure was both when she
stepped on the red carpet wearing a jaw dropping golden coat by Chinese
couturier by Guo Pei. While being interview by Andrè Leon Talley the singer
revealed that the coat was all handmade and that it took more that two years to
complete it! Though the internet had a lot of fun with the look we are sure of
one thing: Rihanna truly was a Princess of China.
